It really is a rare thing when a brilliant songwriter and an equally good singer is one person. On first listen to Kate Voegele's debut album Don't Look Away, i was really put away by her tiny vocal range , but could'nt help but notice the brilliant songwriter that she is.Though i can probably name about fifty artists of today with the same theme(Girl,Guitar), what Kate brings to the plate is entirely different from her contemporaries. Her voice is very similar to established popstar Michelle Branch, but thats as far as their similarities go.The album doesnt offer any out-of-the-world stuff but there's not one bad song on it either. This is where she really could've done better.Another major problem i had with her was understanding the words coming out of her mouth. Not that they were tough or anything, just that her voice is really feeble.Every other sentence tends to finish with a "Uh..yeah..".My Favorite 5 Songs from the album :
1.Chicago - The album opener. It's got a very nice hook and has super slick production. Not surprising that she's chosen to open with an up-tempo song.
" And I wanna hate you cause you don't give me no conviction
Your betrayal oughta make this break down no trouble at all"
2.No Good - Angst-ridden. You can literally feel the heat!!
3.Might Have Been - Again up-tempo . The heavy guitar strumming really goes with her voice.
" I was so cynical,
Just inconvincible,
Nobody seemed worth trusting
But sure enough, just when
I'd near given up,
You appeared there among the destruction yeah"
4. I Won't Disagree - My favorite song. Everything here is PERFECT.
5.It's Only Life - Nice ballad telling you not to take things too hard on yourself.
I also liked Facing Up and Only Fooling Myself.Click Here for a video of her song Wish You Were.
All in all , a pretty strong debut effort from the young lady. 7.5/10
